Hello!

I have a mid 80s 20HP Johnson that has sat for 15 years. We pulled it out, hooked up fresh gas and she fired up on the second pull!

However, it's not idling well. I have to leave the choke out about a 1/4 inch to get it to stay idling. If I push the choke in, it dies.

I took the carb apart and sprayed it down with carb cleaner. The float is black and looks like it's some kind of plastic. It appeared to move freely. The needle valve looked perfect and still had the orange on the tip. No change in operation.

The plugs look good and are gapped at .030.

The water pump appears strong with good flow out the exhaust and pee hole.

Any thoughts?

I was wondering about the choke. If I pull it out, it sucks itself back in slowly. Is it supposed to do that? Or is it supposed to stay where I put it?

Thanks for any thoughts.

You need to get a carb kit and do a proper rebuild, including removing the jets and cleaning out behind them. It sounds like your idle circuit is all gummed up.
