Guys here is my question.... I got this motor last year and I had some problems with the floats in the carbs sticking. Of course the last day I took the boat out in September it ran like a champ (its on a 18' alumunum smokercraft pushes the boat 50+ mph). My question is.....the boat has been stored all winter long, I took it out of storage last week and the motor started up right away (hooked to ears) and ran fine no stalling or hesitations. What is the likelyhood when I put the boat in the water (hopefully this weekend) the carbs are going to stick again? Im no mechanic ( I do have an uncle who is and can work on this) is it worth keeping this motor or trying to sell? Is the motor worth anything?

THANKS

Did you rebuild the carbs last year?

Use fuel stabil?

Winterize?

Sea-foam?

Buck, If you run the motor on the muffs with the cowling off, you can see if the carbs are leaking. A few drops are not a problem, especially if the motor runs good. As for the lifespan of the motor, I have a '77 Merc 1500 (very similar to yours), with lots of hours. I plan to run it until I sell the boat, or it blows up.

BTW watch the cooling system on these motors. If the teletale is not lukewarm or colder at idle, you have waterpump issues. it is probably worth it to change the impeller, if you do not know the last time it was changed.
