No Oil Pressure, Oil in Bilge??

Hi,

Took my 22 foot sunrunner out today for the second time since it was serviced.
The other day it was running great. I have a 260hp V8 I/O. I had her up to 43 mph on gps at 4000 rpm. Sounded and ran well. Today...headed out opened her up...was at 3500 rpm and it maxed out...slower speed and then a pinging, banging noise. Shut down right away, smelled oily smoke, pulled dipstick and it was dry! Got towed in and saw some clean oil in the bilge. Marina thinks it might be my oil pan? Any ideas? Expensive fix??? Help!!!

Thanks!

Re: No Oil Pressure, Oil in Bilge??

You did check the oil when you opened the engine compartment before starting, right? (it was normal?)

Did someone change the oil recently?

It sounds like someone did not tighten the drain plug and/or the oil filter.

Oil pans don't usually "fail".

You may have had a little water in the bilge when it started dumping oil into the bilge. If you have an auto bilge pump it would have pumped it all overboard leaving a little behind.

It doesn't sound good. You may be buying a new/rebuilt engine.

I was able to restart since I wasn't sure what was going on. Motor started and ran ok. I did not run for more than a few seconds and I heard the clicking sound...so I shut right off. It did run though...I'm pretty sure I caught it before it was toasted???

So how much oil did you have to put in it before you re-started ?

I didn't put in any...I had not checked the dipstick and did not see the oil in the bilge at that point...I had to get out of the channel...so I ran it for a few seconds to move it.

Ah....did you check the oil pressure when you started it?

Depending on year/make/model.....you may also have an alarm system that will sound with low oil pressure....

Well....yeah. But I was getting the impression we were talking about a fairly new boat....Old engines ....yeah I'd buy that. My old boat was only a 1966 model. no rust on the pan...Of course it was not left in salt etc...

I suppose the pan could fail if the bilge was full of salt water and the pan had no paint on it etc.....

I just thought it unlikely in a newer boat...

I learn something everyday!

They sure do fail...all the time!

Had a pan on a 305 leak all of its oil out through a tiny rust hole.

Re: No Oil Pressure, Oil in Bilge??

I have 2 friends with 4.3l V6's. With mine that makes 3. Mine was (since been replaced with a shiny new 2006 4.3MPI:D ) a 1994 and the sump rusted out in 10 years. Another one is a 1995 and the sump rusted out in 10 years. The 3rd I did a couple of months ago, it's a 1991 (so it lasted 16 years).... What I do is take the sump off, cut the rusty bits out and weld new bits of steel in and dress it up all nice. I then take it to a friendly hot-dip galvanizer and have it dipped. Coat of etch primer and a couple of shiny black paint and it's good for about 25 years. Smiles all round.

Like the man said --- your engine's toast. At the very least it will have to be stripped to check the mains and big-ends. Sorry for your loss. :(

I Can't believe that somebody would experince Extreme engine Issues,+ Then try to Restart it Without even Checking the Oil.........

Did you Check the Oil before you went for the run in the 1st place,..??..??......

The Oil Level is Checked in my motor, Everyday it's Started........

I agree with the above,........ You need a New Motor.......

What's so hard to believe? You know people do that every day... and you know he didn't check it at the beginning of the day either... but if I were him I would say I checked it and it was fine.

Re: No Oil Pressure, Oil in Bilge??

Hi,

Spoke to marina today. They put a mirror under engine and saw the oil leaking out of a crack in the oil pan. The engine has to come out. They did put oil in and do a compression test and run the engine and said compression was down 10 on one cylinder and 20 on another but thought that was the way it was prior to the oil issue. Estimate 1300-1600 to repair. This blows!!!

Any thoughts?

Lots of thoughts, most of them not about boat engines :D The main area of concern is not the compressions (piston rings), the main area that will bear the brunt of 'no oil' is the crankshaft bearing surfaces. When they pull the engine and remove the sump, get them to check (and it will be better if you are there watching) the bearings. If one of those is damaged and it's not repaired then your 1300-1600 will look like chicken feed! To do a proper job now could save you a lot of money in the not too distant future....

Do it once, do it right... easiest way to save money is to not buy 'cheap'... or do a 'cheap' repair....

They are robbing your eyeballs out if they charge $1600 to change an oil pan......IMO.....;)

I would agree although your price is going to depend a lot on how hard that engine is tucked into your boat. Some boats are designed so poorly that the engines are extremely difficult to remove.

Just a thought but I wonder if it would be worth it to patch the pan temporarily so that the engine can be run under load to see if any damage can be detected. If the engine seems to be ok, then change the pan out.

If there 10psi on 1 hole,+ 20psi on another,.........

That motor is Junk,........Regardless of When it Happened........

That $1600.00 for an Oil Pan Replacement will be a Waste of Money.........

I think he means that some of the cylinders are 10-20 # lower than others, not 10 or 20# total.......
But if it is only 10-20 # of compression, I wouldn't waste time on that motor......:(

I don't understand him either, but he has to get main journals miked, before going forward with any repairs.

And read up on how to read main bearings, for wear.
