Johnson Seahorse 4hp inline fuel filter?

Hello,

I have just bought a used 4hp Johnson Seahorse outboard engine (twin cylinder two stroke). model number 4br790. Unsure of age (quite old though). This outboard has an intergrated fuel tank with fuel pipe from tank to carburator.

I am having a fuel feed problems due to an inline filter which does not look orginal (paper cone type). Please could you advise me whether the fuel pipe should have an inline petrol filter? As it seems to run ok without it. I am unsure whether this model has a filter in it's fuel tank.

a 4r79 is a US made 1979, the b would designate it was made in belguim 1979. the engine diagram does show a filter, between the stopcock and the carb, but not a part # heres manuals available that are reprints of original. http://www.kencook.com/evinrudejohnsonmanuals/index.cfm?fuseaction=models.main&year=1979&ID=52668
