my 87 bayliner (i know) 260hp Omc while shifting cuts out several cylinders inbetween neutral and forward/rewers, makes going into gears nice and easy. While pulling it out for storage last year, with shifter in reverse it kept doing the cutout bit, even if more throttle was applied. what do I have to look at to fix this?

Your ESA is somehow always engaged. What usually causes this is a sticky lower shift cable which usually means it needs to be replaced.

Do you have a manual?

Are you familiar where the switches that control the ESA are? You will probably find that the switch is always depressed.

You probably also have the older version ESA. The newer one has a 5 second timeout on it so I don't believe you would have this problem...just others:)

It is called an overstroke switch. It prevents the ESA from working when you are in gear.

There is a new ESA which does not use the overstroke switch and uses timers instead.
