25 Johnson shifting problem

I have a 96 johnson that is having trouble shifting. After a day on the lake I loaded it on the trailer and tried to shift it to the neutral position with no success. It passed right on past neutral to reverse. I still have not been able to get it in neutral. Is there a part that could be broken, or a linkage problem?

is this tiller or remote control? was the engine running?

With your engine turned off and fuel disconnected try to change the shift whilst moving the prop slowly by hand.....
