I recently had to replace the alternator and power steering belt on by mercruiser 3.0. I got replacements belts from an automotic store and installed them and they seem to be working fine. when brousing a repair manual it stated you shold not use automotive belts but must get marine belts as they are heavy duty ( and heavy price).

Does anyone know if I am safe with the automotive belts

Re: engine belts

Don't worry, it's fine to run a belt from an automotive store. I have done it for years with no ill affects. As long as the belt matches the specs of the belt you need, it's good to go.

Just always check your pullys for rust and corossion. This will wear any belt down in no time.

Re: engine belts

On the 3.0l engines usually the spare belt is already in position around the front engine mount. It can be a bugger of a job lifting the front of the engine at sea.:D

I get mine at Advance Auto (I would never find them at a marine store). Just be sure to get a quality belt and you will be fine.

I'd talk to the guy who helps you back your boat in at the launch, i here he is a really smart guy, not bad looking either!

See ya Saturday, bring those spare belts.
