This is a late 60's 88HP Johnson V-4 in a factory configured I/O setup. I am parting this boat out and was wondering if it is interchangeable with any outboard powerheads.

It shares a lot of stuff with the 90hp outboard, but not directly interchangable. Biggest difference is the carburetor and intake. I know one thing, you can't use an outboard powerhead gasket on it, It will cook it in minutes. Don't ask how I know.

Ahhhh... the old DU series. Boy does that bring back some old nightmares......errr...memories. Is it in an old Evinrude or Johnson boat?

Look closer. That's not a standard tri-hull. It's a gull wing design. It was way ahead of it's time.

I was going to part it out. Would it be worth anything to a collector / restorer? I'm about 5 hours from Seattle on the Wa/ID border, so not exactly in the best location for an eBay auction.

It has a really nice Johnson built I-beam trailer that I wanted to use for motorcycles and ATV's.

I'd toss it at Ebay with a reserve of what ya want out of it. It has some collector value to someone here in Puget Sound. Lewiston not that far, but ya gotta have a good trailer and tires/bearings or no one will bid.

Re: Outboard powerhead in I/O

I was going to stick the motor and outdrive on ebay, so I did a compression test. I couldn't get the starter to fully engage and turn the motor over. I tried using the rope around the flywheel, and it seemed like it went through the stroke. I only got 80psi on each cylinder. That seems really low. What do you guys think? The last time he used the boat it ran good according to him.

Thanks

You probably are not getting a good test with the rope.

I'm going to pull the starter and clean it out. It might come back to life. At least the reading were even across the cylinders!
