I have a 4 cylinder 60hp sea horse. The motor starts and idles ok but when open will bogg down and backfire, boat will no longer plane. There is a large amount of gas leaking into the water as well. I noticed when i prime the gas line that gas will pour out of a brass circle just above the glass filter. I assume thhat there is a seal somewhere. Does anyone know how to get a repair manual or picture off the net? I also need to figure out how to clean the carb. There is also an intermetant bang in the gears in FWD every so often, almost like running oversomething. I assume it is because of the old gears, should i go with a thicker gear oil, or purchase a new gear switch, and lower end.

Thanks

Welcome to iboats. :)

You have a lame horse that might need to be put to sleep. You need to address the gear situation first. If that can't be resolved, no point in wastinig any precious summer on fixing the rest.

Sounds like the classic symptom of worn cogs on the shifter and forward gear. The mating surfaces round-off and can't maintain contact under load. They come momentarily disengaged and reengage. That'll only get worse. You have to replace the shifter (clutch dog) and forward gear. If you can still get them, they ain't gonna be cheap.

The other problem might just be a leaking fuel pump diaphragm.

I just finished rebuilding a lower unit for a guy.
The 312054 clutch dog lists at 101.75.
The 377870 forward gear is 304.56.
The year of your motor is in doubt, but if it doesn't have the detent springs in the prop shaft to hold the dog in gear, you are a fool not to upgrade it by drilling the shaft and installing the detents. You will have to hire a machine shop to drill the shaft. The detent spring is $10.94.
You will also need a seal kit.
And since you will have the water pump apart, you might as well consider replacing the impeller $41.95.
If you hire a shop to do the job, figure a couple hundred $ labor.

Are you starting to twitch yet?

Don't even think about putting in a new dog against a worn gear unless you want to throw away $101.75.
