I've got a 1972 125hp johnson, and it's overheating now. I put it on the muffs and started it, at first the water was peeing out just fine but now the second I start it up the water stops flowing, so naturally I shut the engine off imidiately. I have a clymer repair manual but it's not the best for a description on how to remove the leg from the outboard. Any tips on how to remove it to get to the impeller. I know I undo the four bolts as well as the one on the trim tab, Now I'm lost with unbolting the shift linkage from the leg. any help will do. thanks.

Wait a minute, isn't that a Hydro-Electric shift? It has no shift linkage, but an electric cable. You will see a blue and a green wire on the starboard side of the powerhead, with insulating sleeves over the connectors. Slide the sleeves back and disconnect the wires. Sqiirt som oil or liquid soap on the wire to ease it's passage out of the hole it comes through. TIE SOMETHING ON THE WIRE to pull it back up through when reassembling. Then with all the bolts out, just pull the gearcase down. 4 bolts, plus one larger one, plus one above the trim tab.

I have alot smaller motor but it might be the same. I just changed the impeller on mine. It was pretty hard to get to. I needed a swivel socket to reach mine. I had to reach on the inside bottom of the motor right by the shaft and unscrew this lock nut that holds the shift linkage in place. Once I did that you have to pull gearcase down and it will pull the linkage out of the boot and it should slide down. Hope that helps.

That's exactly what I thought. In the clymer it says to unhook the shift linkage but there is none! That's great I'll have at er' and let you know how it went. thanks.
