I have a 2000 FICHT 225 hp which gets a horn and check engine light on start up.Horn shuts of after 30 seconds lite stays on.The engine starts, idles and runs fine up to 3/4 throttle but at that point bogs out and runs ruff like several cylinders cut out.Whether you ease the throttle forward or punch it same result at almost the same point on the throttle. It is not at a certain RPM because it does it immediatly if you punch it from a stop. The plugs are black and oilly.I just bought the boat(Triton TR21 bass boat). The owner drove on the check out ride and we were doing 65MPH with 3 men onboard.Everything seemed fine.First time I take the boat out I get this immediatly. I have ordered the diagnosic kit(software, plug and manuel). Is there anything I can check out untill it gets here.

Yes - you can check the codes manually as long as you have a system check gauge (usually a sep gauge or on your tach). I've done this and is pretty easy - I also have the software but this is sometimes quicker. I'll paraphrase the procedure and if you post the code you get I can tell you what the service manual says (or maybe you have one) or I can scan the chart and send to you..

Basically you need to get the Throttle Position Sensor to max range and hold it there (possibly with a string or have someone hold it) then turn the key to ON position and computer enters diag mode and flashes the trouble codes on the system check gauge - you would count # of flashes (pauses separate the digits -all are 2 digits). Make sure you have the emergency stop clip in place.

Manual says to disconnect throttle link form the throttle cam (from what I remember that allows cam to move past the normal full throttle mode and TPS is then wide open) - that's what triggers the diag mode...

Hope it helps...

Re: FICHT bogs at 3/4 throttle

Thanks for the info on reading the codes.the codes are as follows: 85,84,82,81,86,83 then the sequence repeats.Whlie I was at it I hooked an ohmeter to the center and outside pins of the throttle position sensor and as I cycled it got readings smoothly transitioning from 1 to 7 ohms. There is a spot between 3 and 4 ohms where it goes to 0 as it passes thru this range.I can't move it in small enough increments to get it to stay on zero and hold but working the TPS either way drops to zero at some point between 3 and 4 ohms.I'd appreciate any help you can give me. Thanks Ron

Service manual says:

81 Ign Coil #1 Open Primary
82 Ign Coil #2 Open Primary
83 Ign Coil #3 Open Primary
84 Ign Coil #4 Open Primary
85 Ign Coil #5 Open Primary
86 Ign Coil #6 Open Primary

Hopefully one of the experts will respond.

the TPS resistance test in the manual says to check between Green and Red and between Green and black - not sure of the colors you tested. There is also a test for Red and Black combo - but that's not looking for smooth evenly changing readings - rather that it should be > 3000 ohms.

Good luck.

most of the time when you have that many open circuits the emm will need to be rebuilt..

Thanks for the help Tampa Boater and Muskrat.I taked to a couple of techs by phone and called DFI.Everyone says EMM.I took it offyesterday and sent it in this morning.Prior to this I had checked compression, fuel pumps, each coil, cylinder drop test(all about the same)......Will let you know how I fare. Thanks Ron

Thanks again Tampa Boater and Muskrat.I recieved the emm from DFI Technology rebuild, hooked it up and problem solved.Although the rebuild was expensive ($725 including shipping) I am sure I saved a bundle plus the delay of taking it to a repair shop. The shops are buried right now and few work on the FICHT motors.
