Took the boat out the other day after buying it. Was told it had forward, neutral, reverse. However, reverse is non existant. Took it to marine shop he says the reverse spring is probably broke. Wants $650.00 parts and labor. Then he says the alternator is not charging but "they don't make parts for that anymore" told me to carry an extra battery. Planed out for about 10 sec. carburator and linkage adjustments messed up. What I am wondering is if there might be another cause for "no reverse because spring is busted". Would I be able to take off the prop and remove that spring and unit WITHOUT removing the lower unit all together. I took the prop off and there is 4 large screws that look like might hold that area on. Could I have some suggestions besides get another motor. Any help appreciated. Tim

Do not try to remove the coil and/or spring that way. I'm not real sure if it is really possible to pull the coil because I've never tried such a (dumb) move, but one thing for sure is if you do try it you will break off the wire. Think$$$ when you do that.

Now, having said all that, did the guy actually check it out electrically? The spring is the LAST thing to suspect after all else checks out electrically.

No he did not do much checking on electric stuff. Just wanted to jump in and charge alot and replace the spring. Thanks for the warning on that!! I know the motor is old and all but I really think I can get some more use out of it. The compression is good on all 4. I had it going across the water then it would just start like flooding out and coughing til it died. Then it would take for ever to restart. The lever choke does work and so does the manuel. I am guessing this is all gas related but NOT SURE on the reverse thing. I know I can do without the reverse but I think it's like that is the only way to slow down in an emergency and besides pushing it off by hand off the trailer.

The first thing you need to do is find another mechanic.
