Need help with 7hp Sea King....w/pictures

I have an early 70's Sea King 7hp motor that has a Clinton engine on it. The problem is that it won't stay running. I've cleaned the carb out and replaced the fuel lines. After priming the carb from the fuel line bulb, it will start for a couple of seconds and then quit. Do these engines have fuel pumps on them? If so, where's it located? Where would I get a carb kit and maybe a new fuel pump, if it has one? The carb says "LMB 165" on it.

Here's the engine info:

Clinton Engines 7hp

Model: J700 1106B

Type No: 60 27007R

Here's three pictures of the engine:

In pic #2, what is this fuel line going to?

I would really like to get this old motor running again, but I'm getting frustrated with it because I don't know what to do. I don't want to have to buy another motor if I can help it.

Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Can't see in the picture, but I suspect the fuel pump is laying down below the carburetor and the hose in #2 is the pulse line to drive it.

What does the pulse line connect to? What does it do exactly?

It connects to the fitting next to the carburetor, then to the pulse connection on the fuel pump. When the engine runs, it sends pulses of air pressure to the fuel pump which activate the diaphragm in the pump. That's what pumps the fuel.

From your photos, it appears that it is properly connected.

Thanks for the info. I've read another thread where people were talking about rebuilding the diaphram themselves. Do you know what they're doing?

I don't. It's probably possible to do, but not easy. Parts for yours may be a bit difficult to get, but it's probably not the only engine that uses that fuel pump. It's just possible that you might be able to get a diaphragm from a local small engine shop...if the pump is not proprietary to that particular outboard.

The other option would be to substitute a generic pulse driven fuel pump for this one, if it's defective and you can't get parts. There are lots of them out there, and they're not all that expensive. In fact, the small engine shop should be able to guide you on that point as well. In the case of yours, unlike some other pulse pumps, it's not a direct connect to the carburetor, so any of the generics would work, except for the fuel inlet fitting that connects to your tank hose.

That's easy, too, though, since you can buy those fittings inexpensively. All of this would take a little ingenuity to install, but you'd have a standard pump that could be rebuilt if necessary.

Before you do any of those things, though, you need to test your pump. Disconnect the output line from the pump at the carburetor, after squeezing the bulb on the tank line to fill the hose. Get the open end of the line in a bottle or something, then pull the starter rope on your engine. You should see fuel flowing in pulses as the flywheel rotates. It won't be a lot of fuel, but some should pump. No fuel pumping....bad pump.

It's important, though, to use the bulb to fill the line. It takes a while to pump that air out while pulling on the rope.

I appreciate the advise. I'll test the pump this evening and see if it's the problem. I know the carb needs to be tuned up and, more likely, rebuilt. I'll check with a local small engine shop and see if they have any idea where to get a rebuild kit for it, or if they have a carb that would work on this engine.
