I took my boat in to the service center. He's pretty highly reccomended around here for these older boats. I had a leak in the gearbox when I pulled it out of the water. The gearbox had filled with water and I ran it like that for a little while (10 mins or so).
He says the gimbal bearing is bad, u joint is bad, drive needs completely reseales and there is a lot of rust on gears and shafts. He seems to think this is going to hit several thousand dollars and that the boat isn't worth that.
It's a '69 Mark Twain. The interior is above average for the age, and the hull is good, but with extensive cracking of the gel coat. The floor is solid, but there is some rot on the stringers. I know because I can see wood coming from under the floor into the bilge area.
I have $1500 into the boat and trailer. I've barely had it in the water.
Where do I go from here? He seems to think that the drive isn't worth fixing, but I'm not sure I agree. I know newer ones are pretty pricey. I know the boat isn't worth a red cent the way it sits.
What would you guys do?
