centrifugal slinger

Just curious what the purpose of it is. I replaced the impeller on my Mercruiser tonight and forgot to put it on. I'll have to pull it off again to put it on and I will, but was just curious what it did.

My theory is that it helps keep exaust gasses from entering the pump body when the pump is not covered by water (on plane)

Can you explain a bit more ? Does your manual call it a slinger ?

yes the online manual and the parts manual both call it a slinger. It sits on top the water pump on the shaft
