Hello All,

Getting ready to cut the wood and make new side panels for my 88 wellcraft 180 classic. Found a great deal on 3 yards of vinyl (15.00) but after looking through this forum I think it may be the wrong kind. Its nice looking but it has a very thin felt-like backing on it. Just wondering if this might be an issue when I go to staple it on as far as stretching etc. They will take it back if it is the wrong kind, or do you think it will be alright? Also, what is the best way to upholster around the curved parts (6" speaker holes, etc)?

Thanks for the info

The felt backing should be ok. Is this marine vinyl?

Best way to go around curved parts is to use a heat gun to help you stretch the vinyl and remove wrinkles. Some vinyl can take more heat than others so you may want to experiment with a small piece first.

Make sure you use stainless steel staples.

It doesn't say anywhere that it is marine vinyl...it was a remenant deal....is there a big difference? And, yes, stainless all the way.:D

Supposedly, the marine vinyl is more UV resistant with special note to "supposedly". It is also a bit heavier...35 oz/linear yard with a width of 54" or so.

I have used Morbern Seabrook and Nautolex vinyls when redoing some upholstery in my boat.

You can buy Morbern at Rochford Supply and Nautolex at Gary's Upholstery. Both are on the net. Nice thing about Nautolex is that you can buy made up welting and hidem in matching colors from Gary's.

For my sidepanels, I have welting all along the edges. It gets stapled on after the vinyl is stapled on. It makes a nice finish to the edge.
