paint?

i just bought a 1972 imp aztec and was talking about painting it. a buddy told me you can't paint a fiberglass boat. i said why not, vette's are fiberglass right, so can it be painted or not?

Yeah, you can paint it. A lot of boats are painted. Can't you just clean up the gel coat instead though?

yes it looks good, have alot of green to clean off the bottom. the thing is that it is a 1972....ugly brown on bottom and ugly yellowish orange stipe at the top. would like to just paint the stripe and clean the rest. what type of paint is used for this aplication? is there anything that helps clean the algea off the bottom, have scrubbed and now i have shinny green instead of dull...

Welcome aboard iboats!

Yes you can paint a fiberglass boat, no problem. As with anything, preparation is the key to your success. The hull must be clean and grease free and you will want to sand all of the gel coat so the paint can grip the surface. I have sucessfully used high-quality automotive paints on several hulls, but there are marine-specific brands out there that are great especially if you plan to leave it in the water for extended periods of time.
