Hello All, Just got a 1988 88 spl motor with everything. Hooked every thing up on the boat, can someone tell me how to hook up the cables with the control box correct. I have the cables hook in the box and hooked on the motor, but I have never had a johnson only a mariner that gave me trouble. Any help would be great. thanks

i have an 88 88spl. put controller in neutral, fast idle down, place engine in neutral, and throttle linkage against stop screw. now adjust the trunion nuts on the cables so that you can connect them, without moving the engine connections.the outboard cable is the throttle cable,

thanks for the quick reply, The shifter is new to me and I know that this is a dumb question but how do I know where neutral is on this control box, it has a small leaver that the previous owner said that you pull it up to warm it up>? I would love to have it out this weekend. thanks

Neutral is with the stick straight up. It should lock in place until you pull the trigger under the handle.

That little lever is the fast idle lever. It only works in neutral and allows you to rev it up to start and warm up your motor. Once it's warm you push it down and kind of forget about it.

in the water, in gear, 600-650. it will idle higher in neutral, and will idle around 800 on muffs in driveway. if you can get it to idle in gear lower fine. it's a great engine. i'm totally satisfied with mine.

Thanks for the help, do you know how much this motor weights? I had a mariner 50 with electric tilt trim, someone told me it's weight was 170. Just would like to know how much more weight is on the boat. thanks

the 88 weight around 290, twice the motor as that toy mariner. be ready for a good ride. mine does 45mph. on an 18' center console.

Thanks for the help, I got everything almost ready to go. I hooked up the Tach and the wires were hard to tell the colors, so I hooked it up, it resets when you turn to the key to zero, when I turn the motor off it says at about 900, is this normal?

I did not want to hijack this thread but since it seems like you guys are done can you tell me what this is circled in this picture. Im fairly sure its a grease fitting. I basically have the same engine as you, but mine is a ' 93 90/65 jet.

I do not have anything on the end of that but there is grease on the inside it.

Tashasdaddy how much reverse should I have? I haven't taken it to the water yet, but just on the muffs. But i think I should have more, everything else is good, Idle, Throttling up, just not sure about the reverse. thanks
