Have a 1981 Johnson 9.9 hp ... still look, feels, and runs like new ... never been touched by a screwdrivers.

Ever since it was new the gas handle has to be turned about 30% until the engine picks up acceleration. Is there a fix to reduce the loose in the handle play ?

if you've never change the impeller, it's 15 years overdue. change it before you burn it up.

At the risk of sounding stupid ... just what is that part called impeller that would be somewhere between the gas handle and the carb ?

The impeller is the heart of your water pump. It is unrelated to your question, but VERY GOOD advice. If it fails (and you are overdue for failure) you could overheat and damage/destroy the motor.

To be honest, I don't think there is a fix for your problem. Those gear driven throttles always have a fair amount of play. If its acting as it did when it was new then you can't really expect anything else.

Hi, (or should I say hey ? lol)

You would normaly be right about the impeller considering the motor is a 1981.

BUT ... this engine spent 80% of it's life hanging on my 21 footer as backup motor (which was never needed) with occasional trolling, or being stored in my furnace room.

It has incredibly low running hours on it ... and I made sure it was started several times a year with fresh gas/oil mixed with carb cleaner.

NOT for sales tx ... lol

The impeller is rubber and dries out and cracks with time. Doesn't matter how much use it has.

WB's right. The impeller NEEDS to be replaced.

Sure is. Its not very difficult. Buy a manual for your motor. You will find that you can do most things yourself.
