Hi all, I recently bought a '72 15 foot starcraft fiberglass project boat for 150 bucks.
Inside it came an old Montgomery Ward Sea King With a 3 piece aluminum
cowl. Serial # 85X735676 AND model # 668985A. I'd really appreciate it if
someone could decipher the hp of this thing and confirm the year. Any other info
I may need to know would be appreciated as well. That being said, the thing
looks like its in really good shape... The carb is espoused like its missing the air
cleaner but other than that it nice.

[edit] Also going on just looks.. It appears to be the size of the 25 - 35 hp engine's now-a-days.

Had me going there for awhile on that model number. I think you will find that it is GG-8985A. That indeed is a 1958, 25hp, Made by Gale Products division of OMC. You may recognize it's cousins, Johnson and Evinrude. Your motor is a Gale model 22D15. Also sold under a bunch of other brand names.

Except for the hood, nearly everything on that motor was also used on Johnsons or Evinrudes at some time or other.

Unless they have already been changed, I'll guarantee that it has bad (cracked) coils in the magneto. They all are. They have new ones right here at iboats.

Re: 1958 Sea kIng?

Update: I just dropped the1958 sea king off at my mechanics and he checked
the compression. He said the top cylinder was creating a spark but the bottom
one wasn't. Told me he'd get it running for under a 100 bucks which is all I wanted to hear.

Wish me lunch, Ill keep you posted.:D

Ohh, and allamid you may find it beneficial to create your own topic.

P.S. Does any know my fuel to oil ratio?

My aftermarket manual indicates 24:1 fuel mix.The Gale motor uses a friction bearing (bushing) in the piston pin.I would reccomend sticking with the 24:1 mix.Use TCW3 rated oil.

It will be much better if you start your own posting but::
Get your self a service manual.Mine covers many brands below 30 hp and works pretty well.Sometimes you can find a manual at the library.
Your motor is a 57 fuel mix is 24:1 stay strictly with this as the motor is all Friction bearings.Use TCW3 rated oil.Point gap is .020,plug gap is .030 J6C plug.Be sure all lines and tank are clean. There may be a screen in the tank that is dirty.Be sure the tank vent is opened and clear.Double check all the passages and jets are clean(prove it)
These motors are famous for bad coils. If discolored and cracked replace.
These are terrific little motors.
Start your own posting.Good luck

Re: 1958 Sea kIng?

Thx steel.

Although I may never have to mix the fuel. I got my eye on this
70 hp 80's era Evinrude. What would you guys recommend I sell a perfect
running 1958 25hp sea king for? (price wise)

check your local swap sheet/newspaper,check eBay as many say here price is what you feel it is worth both as a buyer and seller.

Strangely enough I feel its worth more as a seller than I do buyer. :)

All kidding aside..
I looked around and only found one other. Oddly enough it was located in Illinois
as well. Anyhow... Exact same motor, same year, hp, everything, but It didn't
run, and the dude wanted $200. So I figure I'll sell mine for $400 or use it for trade
towards the bigger motor. Or... Option C: Buy a crappy 3rd boat slap the
sea king on it and go jump some wing damns!
