Mercury 470, Dead. Rebuild or Sink Boat in Lake?

I have a Mercury 470 (165hp). Just locked up over the weekend. It is on a SeaRay 19 ft. in very good condition. The marine mechanic said my options are to buy a new motor (which they don't make anymore, i.e., find one that fits or similar or get a used one and take chances), or have it re-built by the local machine shop. He said it would cost me (ball park) $2,000.

What should I do? Any opinions? Is this too much $$ or a good deal? How reliable is a "re-built" motor? etc...

Thanks for any input!!

New motor would be 3 or 4 times that much.
I think that is a fair guesstimate.
If you think it is high let me remind you of what BOAT stands for.

rebuild it. the hull is worth nothing without a running engine. if you sink it remove all id, or the will look you up to clean up the mess.

Thanks for the input. I will probably look into the rebuild, based on the feedback I got from this forum and the Mercruiser forum.

If you are anywhere near central FL, my dad just took a 3.7 out of a Wellcraft because it had head damage. The guy opted to have my dad put a 5.7 in for him. Anyway, the guy might have the block, and I think the short block is fine, just the head and some valves were bad. Send me a message and I'll see if I can get the guy's information.

Howdy EJ...

If you're running with a '470-Merc' I would suggest you check out the forum at 'Breezeworks.com'. It's full of '470' owners like yourself who'll be glad to help you out.

Many of them have 'been-there... done-that' with this engine.

Also, don't forget to do the water-pump/cam shaft seals while she's down.

Good Luck!

Thank you very much. I checked out the website, but it re-directed me to some "job-listing" website. The out-drive is off and they are pulling the engine today in order to get a better look at it, in case it "doesn't" need to go to the machine shop for a rebuild. The mechanic said something about a 'built-in' alternator possible gone bad. Keeping my fingers crossed.
