85 OMC 3.0 Purple Wire to Coil

Now that I fixed my tilt issue, I can finally attempt to start this beast. I bought this boat (85 Bayliner Ciera 2252) with knowledge of the following:
The boat was last in the water 2 years ago. The prior owner went to start it last year and the alternator was seized. He ordered a new alternator, but was sent a single wire instead of a 3 wire. Everything I've read said that's fine, just cap off the 2 unused wires. After replacing the alternator, the boat wouldn't start, he seemed to think it was weak spark.... When I picked up the boat, the purple wire going to the coil was disconnected, as show in the picture.
Where should this wire go? It was my understanding that it should go to a small post on the starter (slave) solenoid. The only small post on this solenoid acuates the starter, and if you hook the wire to it, the starter continues to run. Any advice is greatly appreciated!

You forgot your picture, but the purple wire goes to the + terminal of the coil.

Hi Don, sorry about the pic. I can't resize them smaller than 150kb.... The wire is connected to the coil already, but to nothing else. I believe it is a resistor wire, so it should need 12V when the starter is engaged, correct? If that is the fact, I should be able to connect it to the positive cable that connect the starter to the slave solenoid. Should this be fused as to not fry the coil?

If the 85 is like an 88, it goes to the small starboard terminal on the starter solenoid.

A purple wire (if origional) should not be connected to the starter.

Okay, so am I correct in assuming that my starter solenoid should have 2 small posts instead of one? I think I finally figured out the picture situation as well...

Do you have a manual, factory? If not, get one. That wire is spliced, and the wiring harness looks like a rat's nest. I think the po rewired it, with no clue.

No manual yet... I'm eyeing one on ebay right now. If I don't win, I'll probably order an online subscription from seloc. Any idea on what I can do with that wire in the meantime? Anyone out there have an omc manual that depicts where this wire goes? Thanks for all the help.

It looks like the purple wire has been modified from it's origional. Is the other end of the wire your holding the same wire I can see mounted to the coil?

A solid purple goes from ignition switch to alternator, and to ESA. You need a factory manual; try searay13 on ebay; no bidding, just high priced.
