Add carb cleaner to fuel filter?

Read this trick in an ezine:
Before installing a new fuel filter, fill it with carb cleaner (ex. Gumout injector/carb cleaner). Run the engine for two minutes to fill the carb then shut down for 15 minutes to let it soak. Then restart.
Will an engine still run on only carb cleaner? Mine starts to stall if I spray too much down the throat.
Good idea? Bad idea?

It's very commonly done with diesels but I haven't ever heard of doing it with a gasser...

That's sort of like putting kerosene, diesel or "Engine Flush" in your engine to "clean out the inside"

It's a great way to break something loose that can plug something up (like an oil gallery to a cam or main bearing) down the line.

In a carb it's probably a good way to soften up stuff that is unaffected by gasoline and plugging up a jet or a passage.

IMHO if you have a need to unplug your carb.....you need to rebuild it.

I wouldn't do it on any diesel I own either.

If everything is ok. Just replace the filter and go boating.

Well I should have been more specific...with diesels it's done with injector cleaners, such as redline and techron, etc...SOP for MBUSA, and mine runs like a top.

I do however agree with the carb rebuild comment...

Re: Add carb cleaner to fuel filter?

just today....after rebuilding my carb i still couldnt get a good high speed run/burn. boat keeps stalling/choking at high RPMs. I added alittle acetone to the fuel and injected a small amount directly into the bowl thri the vent tube. By the end of my tinker around the lake..(30-45 mins) boat was running ALOT better....maybe not 100%, but it sure helped. Im sure the acetone which is HIGHLY flamable helped dissolve any trash left....

i dont think i would run 100% of anything due to low lubraticy of some fluids/cleaners...
