Ok I still have a smoking problem going from idle speed to higher rpm's. Engine runs good top end although starts to sputter and spew blue smoke about 4 min at idle rpm.
Changed the following items

Decarb (Pulled carbs off and are in good shape)
Thermostats
Coils
Wires/ plugs NGK BPZ8hs-10
Fuel filter ( today)
Primer bulb (today)
Startron in fuel

I was told to look at the recirculation valves Any help on the way to clean them or do I need to replace them. The seloc manual helps but I would like a little more insight into what I am getting into. Is this a hard/long project. Any online exploded views of this area of this engine. Any Help ? Should I look elswhere whith the problem I am having?

When they talk about decarb, they are speaking of using chemical compounds to remove the carbon that has built up in the firing chambers, piston rings and exhaust system. It is described here in the engine FAQ:

http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=158076

Decarbing the engine is strongly indicated when you have excessive smoke, but it can be caused by failed thermostats, unbalanced carburetors, poor quality oil, or failed Recirculation Check Valves.

Two possible problems with the check valves are that they are blocked altogether, or that they are allowing flow in more than one direction. You can sometimes correct the problem by cleaning them, but often they need to be replaced.

I think that you can reach all of the your valves by removing the fuel pump. You can test them without removing them, following the instructions in your service manual.

That is some great info. I will try that.

I tried cleaning mine and they passed the test in the manual. This did not work in actual operation.

Walker had the same problem and I replaced mine per his advice and they work fine now.

I'm not trying to contradict ezeke, just posting what happened to me.

You are not contradicting me. I said: "You can sometimes correct the problem by cleaning them, but often they need to be replaced."

Actually, I don't know what manual or test you are using. I use a MityVac.

And Alden135, If you can't test them, new or old, how would you know if they are working or not?

I was trying to be respectful as you know a lot more than I do. Maybe my pre-coffee choice of words were off a little.

The test I used was the one in the factory manual where you use the syringe and alcohol.

Can you look at my other thread?

Are these valves a normally stocked item at a omc dealer and if so what is the part #'s

Also at "trolling speed" (just above idle speed) the boat shutters. What can this mean? Is the timing off?

If you are going to do a de-carb then do it before changing the recirculation valves. That's what messed mine up.
