Suzuki DT65 Float Bowl Drain

While trying to isolate an apparent fuel delivery problem, I removed two of the three float bowl drain screws to verify that the float bowls were filling prior to making a decision to clean the carbs. I was surprised to get only a drop or two of fuel from the drains. Does this mean that the floats are stuck in the up position or is this to be expected? I have replaced fuel pump diaphragms and fuel screen. Flow to inlet of carbs appears to be good. My next step is to replace the fuel line, connector and bullb before cleaning the carbs. Any help is appreciated!

deejaycee -

thanks for the reply - fuel line and bulb was replaced to no avail - rechecked fuel pump output - the carb rebuild is scheduled - does the lack of flow from the drain bowl screws definitely indicate stuck float? - the response is appreciated.

Re: Suzuki DT65 Float Bowl Drain

a stuck needle will normally make fuel flow out the carbs, so a lack of fuel is the symptoms of a real dirty carb ..... but it is always better to rebuild the carbs, than just cleaning them ....

deejaycee 2000:

Thanks again for the reply. I am ordering the materials today. As you can see, I am new to the forum. My boat and engine were purchased new in October of 1986 and used primarily for water skiing on fresh water in Virginia, USA. The engine has been totally reliable until this. I put fuel conditioner in the built-in tank at the end of each season. I suspect that the fuel has been contaminated due to a pollution control change that the government mandated last year. Suppliers in our area had to clean their underground tanks before doing the changeover. I do not know the details, but the new fuel additives apparently cause some solids to form when old fuel and moisture are present. However, nothing was present on the fuel screen or fuel pump diaphragm when they were replaced. The forum is great. Thanks for all of your help.

Waydrews,

Please let us know on your outcome, because I have DT65 and have similar
type of problem with fuel delivery. I was going to start with fuel line, fuel filter
then to fuel pump. I'm going to have to order parts for last two. Carburetors on the engine was just rebuilt on 3/24/07 by the dealer.
My problem is engine bogs down and dies when hits about 2200 rpm.
At times, it runs really good. It starts good and idles fine everytime.
Seems like something is clogging or not getting enough fuel to the carburetors when push past about 2200 rpm at times.

Ron:

I start my carb re-build today - will post the outcome - deejaycee is correct - the fuel pump diaphragm is the place to start - If that does not work, I recall that 2000 to 2500 rpm is the cut-out overide when there is insufficient oil pump flow - I doubt that this is the problem, but just a reminder.

Take care - waydrews

Re: Suzuki DT65 Float Bowl Drain

Success!

As soon as I removed one float bowl after removing the three (3) carbs, I knew that I had found the problem. All three were plugged with golden granules that looked like hardened fish roe. I cleaned all carburetor parts with "gumout" carburetor cleaner, then with "sea foam", and finally with dish detergent in warm water to remove chemical residue from the cleaners and thoroughly dried all parts. I then put everything back together and reset the carb air bleeds to 2 turns. This proved to be too fast, so the idle was richened up to about 1 turn on each carb. The boat has been on the river twice since this work and everything is running great. Even seems to be smother than when the engine was new in 1986. I have photos of the gummed up parts if anyone needs to see what can happen.

Thanks for all of the help!

Waydrews.... Good Work !!!
I'm hoping that my parts (diaphram and screen filter)will show up today, so I can take the boat out tomorrow to test it out... When I was checking out the fuel line to make sure nothing was plugging it up and I disconnected the fuel line going into carburetor and squeezed the bulb and saw some of that you have mentioned like golden granules but small enough to flow through. Maybe I need to drain the tank and clean it out.

Re: Suzuki DT65 Float Bowl Drain

Got my parts and replaced diaphragm and screen filter. Didn't see anything wrong with fuel pump, but replaced all the parts anyway. There were some
granules in the screen filter and i cleaned it. But I replaced it anyway. I'll go ahead and take it out tomorrow and see, but right now, I don't have much confidence anything will change. Meantime, I'll start looking at oil supply

Thanks for your help.... I took the boat out Saturday and
went about 28 miles and it ran good all the way. Ocean was bit rough, so
could only go but 15-20 mph, so we went into inside of Long Beach breakwater
coming back and took it up to around 28-30 mph for a bit... it ran really smoothly.
I cleaned the fuel tank today... found bunch of stuff was at the bottom of the tank. I hope replacing diaphragms on the fuel pump and cleaning fuel filter and the tank fixed my problem for now.
Thanks again for your help
