johnson 70 lower unit removal

I'm new to this forum so please excuse any 'faux pas'. I'm trying to replace the water pump in my 2000 Johnson 70hp. for routine maintainence. I have the seloc manual but I am having a hard time finding out where the shift rod can be disconnected so I can drop the lower unit. Can anyone help?

way up under the bottom carb, port side, a hex-head screw connects the shift rod to the lever

Thank-you. Now, how do I access that hex-head? do I have to remove the lower cowling? Or, can it be done with a long tool?
