Lawnmower gas cap on an outboard?

I'm having a beast of a time finding a gas cap for my old 'Rude 1.5HP Mate. Would a mower cap be an acceptable replacement? I figured I could JB Weld the chain to the bottom of it. Will it work or am I inviting problems? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks, MJ.

If it fits, why not? It will need to be a vented cap, of course, and you'll lose the ability to open and close the vent, but most lawnmower caps are vented.

As for the chain, I don't know what to suggest, there. Rather than using JB Weld, you might consider using a machine screw and nut to secure the chain. I don't know. I'm assuming this is a chain that goes into the tank, with a toggle on it to keep the cap captive.

It won't look right, but it will let you use your outboard until you find the proper cap.

Re: Lawnmower gas cap on an outboard?

Thanks for the heads-up. I figured I would just drain the tank before transport. It only weighs about 20# so thats no big deal. Mine is a '68 1802s 1.5HP Mate so I don't know if the Elto cap will work but I do appreciate the time and effort you spent sending me the link. The chain is indeed an attempt to sailor-proof the fueling process. The reason I thought of a mower cap was because the little metal tank looks like it belongs on the mowers I pushed as a kid. The pre-plastic days. Thanks again for your help. MJ

Anything that fits will work. And forget the chain...just by two caps (cheap) ...if ya have a spare, ya never need it!

CheapCheap!!! I bought the motor for $80 and spending $40 for the gas cap that got smashed in transit is not acceptable for this poor-man's fishing boat project. Thanks for the advice about carrying a spare. Redundant systems are a good thing when you are in the middle of nowhere in the middle of the night. I really like this site. Lots of people that are willing to give their experience and knowledge all in one place. Thanks for sharing, Scott.
