we have a gmc 6500 bucket truck with a cat motor. this thing spends 90% of it's time idleing or going 2 mph. my ? is how often should we change the oil right now it gets done every 3000.

What year? Engine Model? I'll double check on the gallons of fuel, but with so much idle time I think I'd want to change based on hours at around 250. I use to do calcs for fleets on this, and I would start by asking how many hours a day does it run . . . It usually is a real eye opener Think about time cards etc. 40 hour work week . . . Make sure you use a good C grade oil too. CI4 Plus or CJ4 are the standards now . . .

We do our fleet every services 2-300 hours and they get a full PMB every 5-800 depending on what they are used for.

is a 2000 it's a 6 cly thats all i know it runs 12 hours a day 5 days a week

2000 bucket truck then it probibly has a 3126 or 3176 engine. 250 hours would be an ideal oil change IMO. Every piece of equipment our company maintains is on a 250hour oil change routine unless is has an oil burning system then its every 500 hours. We run everything from 3126 powered flat beds to 3516 powered 240ton off-highway dumptrucks.

Definitely a 3126 (GM never used a 3176 which is actually a C10 in 2000) and definitely 250 hours. 60 hours a week means once a month . . .
