Johnson engine ID ??

I have a Johnson 50hp hydro shift that came on a 66 Span Nomad I'm restoring. The ID plate on the transom mount has been painted & is not legible. It does not have stamped numbers on it. I was wondering if there was any type of ID plate/tag in the under-cowl area that could help me ID the motor. I am interested in reviving the motor, but need to know what year it is.

Thanks in advance!

Look for a "freeze" plug on the cylinder block, about the size of a nickle. It should have model and serial numbers stamped on it .

I checked on the block. I assume you are referencing the plug next to the flywheel on the top facing side of the block? Anyway, I found numbers on that one & now I'm having a problem crossing them on any of the charts I find. The numbers on the freeze plug are...E3465496...Any thoughts?

To assist in narrowing the span of years, does anyone know what span Johnson made the 2 cylinder 50hp?

That number you gave is the serial number. Unfortunatly, Johnson didn't see fit to put the model # on it. Perhaps a Johnson dealer would have a serial number list.

I have serial number 5,924,582 which is a 1984, so yours is pre-1984

Edit: 1961 ended with 2,249,094. I'd guess your 50 is early 1970s
