HELP - Steering linkage

Hey all,

Recently I became the owner of a 35 SeaHorse '59 Johnson, but haven't had a chance to run it in anything but a barrel yet. I'm putting it on a boat that originaly had a Mercury outboard, and I'm running into some problems.

The steering is a Teleflex rack and pinion type cable, and I've found a transom mounting kit that will work perfectly. But HERE's the problem, I cannot find a bolt/swivel joint to connect the steering rod to the engine. A bolt won't work because it would bind up as soon as a person turned the steering wheel.

Please help, I think I might lose it if I don't get this thing in the water soon :D

Hmm... That could work, thanks for the picture.

Do you get full travel with that set-up? Like cranking all the way left and right?

Re: HELP - Steering linkage

It is virtually impossible to get full steering arc with Teleflex (or any other push-pull) steering on that motor and still be able to tilt the motor. It was designed for the old cable and pulley system. Furthermore it is very difficult to get the push-pull system installed so there is no interference somewhere, especially when tilting the motor. These are two reasons that I don't like push-pull systems on old motors. You will see what I mean.

Re: HELP - Steering linkage

Thanks for your help guys, and yes, I've got problems tilting the motor. Even without the added on piece of angle iron I made this morning, the motor won't tilt all the way up and lock. Oh well, its a fairly short shaft engine, so not too many worries there.

The boat and motor definately aren't a match made in heaven. I bought this outboard for 35 bucks, and the boat and trailer were free. Someone stole the 150HP Merc engine off of this boat, and the owner didn't want it anymore. The teleflex steering system was already installed. I'm just trying to get something put together so my wife and I can have some fun.

Let me know if anyone wants to see pictures, I'm fairly happy with the way the angle iron setup turned out. Although I don't have that extra rod that is in the picture that goes from the teleflex telescoping ram to the outboard. Do I need one of those, or can I just bolt the teleflex ram right to the piece of angle iron?

Re: HELP - Steering linkage

you need one johnson/evinrude steering link ebay. you can take 3/8 inch rod, and bend it like a flat C each end goes into the tilt pin hole, and when lifted up the motor will sit on it. i have one for my 50hp as i can't tilt all the way up. i check ebay and this is cheaper, but you can keep looking. http://www.iboats.com/Teleflex_Hing...d.217127--list_time.1181506513--view_id.40281

Re: HELP - Steering linkage

I suppose I would need the steering link, otherwise I'd never be able to tilt the motor... unless I un-bolted the piece of angle iron. Do most link arms pivot or swivel on both ends? I don't believe I could tilt my engine unless they did.

Do you have a picture of this 3/8" rod you made? Is it to lock the engine upright? I'm not sure what its purpose would be.

Re: HELP - Steering linkage

here's a picture of a tilt loop. goes in the outer most trim hole, and when you tilt the motor up, you flip it up, and the lock the tilt lock. i was bringing it up while you were typing.

i don't know where you live, but check the boat repair shops for a used link and tilt loop. or you can make one.

Re: HELP - Steering linkage

I'm not so sure I have adequate room for one of those steering links. After studying it a little more, I wouldn't get full steering arc by bolting the motor directly to the teleflex ram. So I might be majorly screwed.

Which mount would I be better off with?
