First off I bought this motor with the boat i purchased recently and it is a short shaft motor on a boat that needs a long shaft. So I figured not to run it, and sell it as is, but being short on money I figured i'd try to see if it runs because the guy I bought it from said it ran and you can sell a running motor for more then a broken one. So i hooked up the battery and it wants to crank over but it won't start start. what could it be, my first guess is the plugs and second is the gas/fuel mix. So I need to know if it could be something else being a saturday at 7 the local auto store isn't open, and i want to know what year the motor is and how many horses. I think its a 1960 35hp, but i'm no expert. Serial 1329043 Model E Sorry about my spelling. This is an old white motor. I will upload pics later. Where could i also find some parts for this motor such as lower unit screws for the oil and some for trim thing(not sure on what it is). Much thanks in advance.:redface:

Well I got the motor running but no water coming out and I was using a barrel so its either plugged or pump is shot. It smoked a lot but I didn't run the motor for more then 15 seconds I just wanted it to start, and it did. I figure it was just the old gas mix. It started via the electric start and according to what I found it is a 1960 Mercury 300 35hp Short shaft, electric start, with alternator.

Yes that is where I got my info. I would have looked before but I had to leave to go do some things. How would I go about taking out the impellor/water pump?

i know you probably don't want to get a manual if your going to sell it. might sell better with one. do some impeller searchs on here and you'll come up with lots of questions from people stuck. not familiar with your motor but here are basics. put motor in forward gear and lift motor up so you have room to drop lower. you can leave prop on but safer to take off in case you drop unit. should be 2 nuts over housing on front sides and maybe one behind, as well as one under trim tab mount. remove rear ones, then loosen front ones as you pull unit down. sometimes you have to jar unit with rubber hammer or hammer on a board to break free. keep loosening nuts till it can fully drop. the water tube usually pulls outta the block with the unit. couple different style pumps, but usually 3 nuts holding top on, around driveshaft. hopefully you got waterpump kit instead of just an impellor so you can change gaskets. impellor just pulls up off shaft, there is usually a very small shaft key in there that sits on flat spot of shaft, don't loose it. if impeller is frozen you can try to split with a chisel. usually when i've chisled it a couple times it starts to free up. found that marking it with chisel is good as it marks the top so you are sure which direction veins of impellor were folded for reassembly, if it has any veins left. for reassembly, you can put a little lube around impellor so it turns free on start up, and change all gaskets on water pump upper half to be safe. put everything back togethor the was you found it. if the impellor was in pieces, you may be wise to hook up water tube and flush out, ensuring you have flow through pee hole. putting the unit back on is easier with a third hand, to hold while you line up tube and shifter. if drive shaft doesn't engage, slide on prop and move slightly till engages. slowly tighten front housing nuts as unit moves up in position.
not familiar with this motor, so somethings may be slightly different, and i mighta forgot a couple tricks by rattling this off outta my head.

Well I haven't bought anything yet and will buy the Kit then. Thanks. And how much water should it pee when running because I got out the air compressor and shot air up and down it and with water in the barrel and it bubbled quite nicely. I'm not sure how long it may take for it to start "peeing". Thanks

usually just a steady stream, with no real pressure, usually pees about 5 to 10 secs after start up. once all the passeges are full and water is circulating. it will pee.
