I have a 1964 18hp Evinrude that the shift linkage bottom bolt is stripped and I need it fixed to fix 2 of my problems. One is a nocking noise and the other would be this.

I need to know if it is possible for me to fix this with little to no cost or should i just take it to the local marina?

So the pictures refer to the knocking noise as the lower cover bangs up against the shift handle, right? I suppose the handle is bent? Either that or the shift shaft that goes through the housing is bent. If it is the shaft you may be able to straighen it after removing the handle, but be careful, you don't want to crack the housing. If it is the handle that is bent, it will probably break if you try to bend it back. May need a new handle.

Recently replaced the shift linkage coupler in a 57 Johnson 18 hp, a cousin to your outboard, because of a similar bolt-stripped problem. So I'm guessing the parts you need are also available. Got mine from Engine Blade & Prop in Milwaukee...nice folks, too.

One of the bolts in the shift linkage is stripped and I posted about this problem once already and they said that it was probably the shift linkage and that the knocking was the gears. They said the shift linkage was off because of a different problem I had before, and that would cause both problems.
