well it's been 35 years since I had a motorcycle, (started a family and didn't want the gamble of getting run down), but thats all behind me now.. I like the looks of the harley soft tails but don't have the cash for one of those so the yammy looks real good for the money. any of you folks had any experience with it..?

Re: yamaha road star

Very nice bikes. Highly recommended.

Take the rest of this with a grain of salt...

The Yammy will probably ride better, go faster, and get better gas mileage than a Harley. Having said that, if you really want a Harley, no amount of after market accessories will turn that Yamaha into a Harley. No exhaust will make it sound like one. I've seem so many guys put a lot of money into their bikes only to sell them to get a Harley after there was no possibility of adding another accessory to their bike. You'll never recoup that money.

If your dream is to own a Harley you could:

1. Buy that Yammy, pay it off, and trade up later. Don't wast too much money on accesories.

2. Buy a Sportster. Pay it off, and trade up to a nicer Harley, rinse, repeat. They hold their value extremely well. You could repeat this process over the years on up to an Electraglide if you wanted to.

If you just like Harleys but don't have that deep-down itch to own one, get that Road Star. It's a fine bike and you won't be dissapointed.

My $.02 :)

I hear what your sayin I386, I don't think I'm too hung up on the harley, at least not enough to cough up the extra bucks it would take to get it. I like the yammy well enough. I have even looked at some of the other jap twins but most are water cooled and have that ugly radiator hanging off the front end..that I can't deal with...
rwise, looks like you got a real deal on yours... looks great, do you like how it performs?

its got more than i need for go, runs smooth just like all Harleys:rolleyes::D bit heavier than i am used to and with samson big guns on it, well it is a bit loud. All in all I got a great deal on a great bike. I have seen others go about the same price on ebay. Its really all in what you want, nothing wrong with the ricers. I wanted an American made bike.

Re: yamaha road star

My parents have a roadstar midnight edition, 1800cc and came all decked out. They absolutely love it. My dad started out wanting a harley but decided that this bike was for him. He installed vance & hines exhaust and while it still doesn't sound like a harley, it sounds durn good with the v twin lope. They have put 15000 miles on it in two years with zero problems. With the exception of the electrical short we found last night, but that was from an aftermarket add of tri bar running lights and a sloppy installation at the dealer(told him we should install them). Now he wants me to rewire the lights for him so he no longer has to deal with wire to sharp metal contact, but once again, nothing to do with Yamaha at all. Anyways, good luck with your purchase. Working on dad's last night kinda gave me the itch, if only I can talk my wife into it. Hmmmm
