I purchased a 92' Tracker with a 40 HP Evinrude that must have set a while. I just had the carbs cleaned and reworked. Now when I start the motor with the muffs on, it will idle for a minute and then go to wide open throttle with out moving the throttle. When I cut the key off it still runs and sounds like it smooths out the motor. I can pull the fuel line to stop the motor. It's a 2 cyl and when I pull the wires one at a time the RPMs will drop back to about 3000. Anyone have any ideas? Could it be an ignition system electrical problem. I have checked the prices and found them to be very high when compared to other 40 HP motors. Thanks for any help to pin point the problem.

Welcome to i boats. you are going to blow that motor up. never rev in neutral above 1500 rpms. sounds like a kill wire problem, either in the switch. also sounds, like timing plate, is stuck, or the linkage has come loose. you need a manual to check the link and sinc. if you are not good at trouble shooting and mechanics. take to the shop.

Thanks for the information. Still trying to get the carbs set. Not my desire for the motor to run WOT. It takes off on its own and I shut it down ASAP.

forget the damn carbs, and check the timing plate, and link & sinc. you left something loose. until you do that don't start the motor again. or you may have a face full of connecting rod.
