I was recently given a 3hp minn kota trolling motor, the previous owner said it worked but was grinding so when I took it apart I found that one of the magnets had broken into about three pieces. Does anyone have any idea on where to purchase one of these magnets?

You'll have to identify what you have more clearly than that, Spoke. A 3HP electric motor would draw more current from your 12v battery than your starter motor. It would kill the battery in 10 minutes or less.

Tell us the model number. It is probably not worth fixing.

Re: Minn Kota 3hp trolling motor armature magnets

I had one of those a number of years back. I originally bought the motor in 1988 and it started making a knocking noise at the end of the season in 1994. When I pulled it apart the magnets came out in pieces. I inquired with Johnson Outdoors and determined it was not worth fixing. I replaced it with a new 55 lb thrust motor in 1995 (by that time MinnKota was no longer labelling them as hp rated units). It lasted until this year and I bought a new one. So my first two electrics lasted a total of 18 seasons, and they were used quite a lot.

Thanks for the input guys. I did find out today from a Minn Kota Service Tech in St. Louis that the HP after the 3 meant High Perfomance and was often mistaken as Horse Power. The magnets come installed in the middle housing of the motor and can still be purchased for about $100.00 but he is going to replace just the magnets for me for about $40.00. Not to bad I guess. The actual rating is 50 to 60lb thrust...Thanks again
