I need to know if it is better to remove stern drive before engine or will it slip apart. thanks

In general, Yes, pull the drive.
Specific information requiers knowing what kind of drive it is.

Yep, pull the drive. If you don't come out exactly straight forward, you risk damaging the coupler. Besides there is no way to putting it back on and checking the alignment with the drive on.
