I have a Johnson 1977 6hp hand start. It would start so I rebuilt the carb and replaced the fuel pump. Now it will start briefly with the choke on and throttle open. But then dies quickly. Any suggestions.

Did you turn out the low speed needle 1 1/2 turn's to start after rebuilding the carb?

Do you have good spark on both? Make a spray bottle up of 50:1 mix and spray it in the carb and it it runs for 5-10 seconds then it's a carb issuie. Something went wrong on the rebuild probably. And yes, make sure the low speed jet is turned out.

Re: Can't start Johnson 1977 6hp outboard

Seems to run good when I first start it then about 30 seconds later dies. I can keep the motor running by spaying the mixture directly in with a spray bottle. So I took the carb off to see what I screwed up but I can't find anything. I double checked that I had the needle valve 1-1/2 turn out.

I took off the line to the carb to check pressure. I get a reasonable stream out when I hand start the motor. Obviously not as much if I just squeeze the bulb. The bulb stays 90% hard so it's not loosing pressure.

Not sure where to go from here.
