Mercruiser V8 Stalling at 1000 RPM

Engine stalls at 1000 RPM. If I feather it - push forward on the accelerator arm in little bits it once it gets above 1000 rpm it runs fine. Or if I get it just below 1000 rpm pull back on the accelerator arm and than slam it in forward it gets above 1000 RPM's and runs fine. But if I just run the accelerator arm forward in a natural motion - once it gets to 1000 RPM's it stalls. Help - I want to stop this madness.

Sound like a fuel starvation problem. change fuel filter & clean carb & give her a full tune up.

My 4.3 does that if it's not warmed up. I think it's something in the carb though. Maybe a piece of dirt in one of the jets.

our 4.3L had a similar problem not long after we got it.
I pulled all the plugs and closed the gaps a few thousandths, and replaced the distributor tune-up parts. That was a couple years ago - it's run very well since.
But if you've got Fuel Ing, or Elec Ig I guess that wouldn't apply.

Mercruiser 898 (GM305) with 2 bbl rochester carb, mallory distributor, in a 1978 Searay.
Replaced plugs, points, condenser, cap, rotor, wires, accelerator pump,fuel filter fuel water separator and changed the oil. set idle, set dwell, and set timing. Problem moved from 1000 rpm to ~2000 rpm have not rebuilt carb yet.
When you open the engine up it makes a sucking sound right around 2000 rpm then it stalls (I assume the sound is the barrels opening up). If I feather it a little (throttle down and up ~2 times really quick) as it starts to stall then push it up past 2000 it will get up and run just fine. Does this every time I accelerate warm or cold. Not sure whats up, tired of throwing money at it. Any ideas ?

if its a carb there is a small fuel filter on the fuel line entering the carb.

That's where I'd have started........ It Sounds like the Acc. Pump Isn't doing it's Job........

I have a '97 Merc 5.7LX, engine used to stall out at low RPM while shifting from forward to reverse, always at the worse possible times in tight parking spaces! Had it in the shop this spring, they adjusted the choke and it's been fine since. Starts much better also.

Hi - already changed out the Acc. Pump. Now if you can think of any reason why the new pump isn't doing its job let me know. It's ok when going from forward to reverse - it's strictly when I go forward and it stalls around 2000 rpm. Initially it stalled out at 1000 rpm. After some elbow grease it moved up to 2000 rpm before stalling out. Thanks for the input - please keep it coming. What about the engine kill switch - someone said look into that. I thought that would only be problem if it stalled out from forward to reverse or vice versa. Thanks - AGAIN
