Hello, I recently bought a boat that has been sitting for ten years. The boat is a 19 and a half foot aquasport center console from the mid 70's and the motor is an 84' Evinrude GT150. I am mechanically inclined, so should I attempt to clean the carbs, or should I leave that to someone else? What is the best way to clean the fuel tanks? In short, what are the things I should do to get this boat mechanically sound for the water? Thanks, I will post pics later.

Hey Nilzlofgren, and welcome to iBoats! You've come to the right place for help. This place is AWESOME! Keep in mind, I'm no mechanic or expert by any means, but here's what I'd do for starters:

1) Fuel System overhaul - including cleaning\rebuilding carbs
2) Replace spark plugs
3) Replace lower unit gear oil

For number one, I'd drain out all the old fuel by siphon or whatever means possible. I'd dump a can of Seafoam in it along with about 10 gallons of fresh fuel. Replace the fuel line to the engine. Replace fuel filter. Clean and\or rebuild the carbs (sorry, not familiar with Rude's).

Once you got all that done. put new plugs in her and replace the lower unit oil. Then, I'd check back here to see if anyone can think of anything else. Then I'd see if she'll fire!

Congrats on the new boat!

If it has never seen salt water you may be blessed.

Read this : http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=158086

In addition to above..... do the water pump impellar.

Read the restoraion section on iboats too. You sincerely want to check for rot and water logged flotation.

Have fun.

Bob' link is the bible to wakeing a motor. i also like to tilt them as high as i can get, and put marvel mystery oil in the cylinders for a couple of days, then lower and drain.
