I have a 78 85 hp Johnson and I ran out of gas the other day. After refueling I noticed engine didn't run as smooth and at WOT it seemed to be running at about 80%. Could I have sucked up junk from bottom of tank into filter? It looks pretty easy to unscrew and look. Is it? Any other ideas? I was thinking of spraying cleaner into carbs.

Re: cleaning fuel filter

If it has a filter, change it. Do not spray anything into the carbs..it will do NOTHING but wash the oil film off the cylinder walls! Best bet is yank the carb(s) and clean them out. You probably did suck up some junk..

Re: cleaning fuel filter

You might want to look into a fuel purifier (do an online search for "marine fuel purifiers"). They are used in conjunction with your primary filter to remove water and contaminates from your fuel. It would prevent clogging and extend the life of your fuel filter, so you won't have to change/clean as often. Just a suggestion. Thanks for reading.
