My outboard is a 1978. When first starting it I always have to squirt a bit of starting fluid into the carburetor intake to get it to start. Won't start without it, but doesn't need any the rest of the day. It has an electric choke which works. I pump the gas bulb, raise the idle lever and hold the choke switch, but it still needs the starting fluid. Runs great once started. Any tips appreciated.
Thanks, John

Why do you say the choke works, John? "Click" doesn't mean it is choking. Tell us more about this.

Never use starting fluid in a 2 stroke. No lube means danger of destroying the engine. Use premixed fuel.

If your primer system was working (choke) I don't think you would be having this issue. If you are absolutely sure your primer system is working, clean your carbs. And as JB says, do NOT use starting fluid, it strips oil off anything it touches... think of it as a flammable brake cleaner.

good way to burn a hole in a piston. check your compression with the engine cold. also remove the front of the air sliencer, now, operate the choke button, and watch the choke butterfly in the carb, are they closing all the way?

When I operate the choke switch with the motor cover off I can see it close.
What is a quick "how to " on cleaning the carbs? Until I get this fixed are you saying to spray a little gas/oil mix in place of the starting fluid? Thanks to all for the tips!

When you say that you can see the choke, I guess that you mean that you can see the linkage moving. You cannot see the chokes with the air silencer on.

What I think the fellows here are trying to get you to do is to determine that the choke plates are closing 100% while you try to start, and that the vacuum created by the pistons is able to pull enough fuel into the engine for a cold start.

By watching the plates while someone else hits the key, you can determine if they stay 100% closed. If they do, you should not need the starter fluid. If they don't, you will probably be able to adjust them together by moving the choke solenoid in small increments.

listen to what hes saying.in my case it looked like they were closing all the way but they werent. im talkin a dang 1/16" inch made all the difference.almost closed isnt closed w/ this.its funny how common this really is!!! well not for the guy whos having trouble starting i guess.
