Merc 9.8 110 - No Water out telltele?

Hey everyone,

I just got my first boat/motor package. Its a 12ft tin can with a 9.8 110 merc, year 72. I'll start off by saying I know nothing about this motor! I do know that there is no water comming out the telltele. I replaced the empeller which was totally gone. I dont know what to do from here, it gets extreamly hot extreamly quick(30secs) Can someone out there please help me, I'm dying to get on the water!!

Clean out the telltale or take it off. You can also put a piece of weed eater string up into it and try to unclog it. Also check your thermostat if you have one (not sure on this size motor).

It sounds like the impeller replacement went wrong, drop the leg and recheck. Make sure the water tube seats properly when you put it back together. If the tell tale is clogged it still pumps water and will not over heat. There is no thermostat in those old motors.
