I want to install a tach on my '78 johnson 115. I know there is a accessory port on the control that I can use, but what tach should I use?

Re: help with a tach

Teleflex and Faria have a whole line of generic tachs that will work with J/E engines. The tach may or may not come with the short wire harness that runs from the tach to the port on the control box. Make sure you obtain that as well. But you can always make up your own.

Re: help with a tach

You'll need 3 wires tapped in to the purple, gray and black wires in the control box; if you have other gauges already, with purple & black attached, you can piggy-back off those. Purple goes to the IGN post on the tach, gray goes to SEND, and black goes to GND. The LT post is for gauge lighting, usually a blue wire, it can be attached to your panel light switch, or another gauge light, or maybe your nav light switch.

BPS sells a tach harness that plugs into the control box socket for about $30.
