What to look for in a used 888 drive

I'm going this weekend to look at a used Mercruiser 888 drive that is still attached to the boat. I'm not sure if the engine runs so I don't know if I can see it work and if not I plan to pull the drive before making a purchase. Other than checking the fluid (to make sure there's no water in it) and looking for cracks in the housings, what other specific things should I check? I plan to make sure the input shaft turns and that it shifts and stays in forward and reverse but is there anything more specific?

Thanks.

Signs of obvious rust & the splines on the input shaft should be nice & square.....;)

Thank you. I have one more question tho... I was told that Mercruiser drives up to and including the Alpha1 Gen1 would be compatible with my bellhousing/engine. Is this a correct statement? If so, it opens up lots of possibilities for getting a drive in good condition with less hours.

BTW, I have a 1975 888 with a Ford v8 that I believe to be a 302.

Thanks.
