This is all new to me. 21', 4300# boat, Used in Lakes and Rivers, some of the lakes are manmade. What type of anchor do I need? The dealer sold me a Pvc Coated Slip Ring Mechanical Anchor. We were on a manmade lake, dropped anchor and likely never got it up, we pulled, motored around it, got rope burns, etc..did get it up eventually. Thought it just got caugt on something. We moved, dropped anchor again, and could not get the anchor to break free. Had to cut the line. Did not think pulling the anchor up would be the toughest part of owning a new boat! What would be the best all around anchor for lakes (manmade lakes w/rock, stumps) and rivers (mud I would think)?

Is there a technique for retrieving anchors other than pulling them up?

Hmm...I wonder if you had that slip ring anchor rigged correctly.

Buy one of the anchors that have a slip ring on them. This will allow you to motor over the anchor allowing the slip ring to slide and you can pull the anchor right up with little or no effort.

It was a slip ring anchor that i was using, not sure which brand. Had it connected to a nylon anchor rope with a "C" clevis. Would a chain between the anchor and rope made a difference? Any other thoughts?

Re: What Anchor Do I Need?

how deep was the water, and how much rope did you have out. ideal is depth of water x7 + rope. this give the angle to anchor, then when you move around to retrieve the anchor, you are not pulling straight up. use the motor in reverse to free the anchor.

Here's a dumb FNG question...Where should and how should the anchor be secured to the boat when pulling on the anchor. I have it tied in the bow compartment where the ladder is, then took the excess rope and wrapped some around those things in the side of the boat (?) that pull out. Whats the correct way to do it so I don't damage anything? 07 Caparral Sunesta 214
