I am trying to restore my fathers, fathers boat. It is a 1969 evinrude 55 hp. I replaced the pulse pack, wiring harnes, batteries, gas hoses, and coil pack wire. I got it to turnover, but it wouldn't stay running. I cleaned out the carbs and now it won't start at all. When I took off the flywheel I noticed the key was sheared off. I know I need to replace it, but when I lined up the key hole and turned it over the timming marks where off. I took the flywheel back off and the marks were still aligned. I would really like to make my father happy by bringing back a peice of his youth. Any and all ideas will be appriciated.

Thanks,
jeremy

The flywheel key sets your timing. Make sure that it is torqued down to the proper specs or you will shear it again. I don't know offhand what it is but your local library should have a manual that would have it in there. You can't just "clean out" the carbs" as there are years of gunk built up in them. Soak them overnight with a good cleaner and put new kits in them. They are about 20 bucks each from your dealer. Set the floats level eith the carb when turned upside down. Glad to see that your heart and soul is in a good project for your dad.

Thanks for your help. I bought a manual the other day. I will try your advice and get back to you.
