Neighbor kid was helping me reassemble my 1950 Sea Horse TN and handed me the rewind assembly upside down and spring went sproing. We have had no success getting it wound up tightly and back in place. Is there a way of doing this without some special tool?

Re: Rewind spring?

Lay the spring in the housing, having the outer portion of the spring secured by the retaining pin.

Install the pulley upon the spring, having the inner portion of the spring secured by the pulley pin.

Install the spindle, washer, nut, whatever the retainment components consist of to secure the pulley.

Now, with the manual starter upside down on the workbench, and keeping a firm grip on the pulley, wind the pulley in a counter clockwise direction until the spring is fully wound.

Keeping a firm grip on the pulley, let the pulley back off slightly until the pulley's cord/rope hole is aligned with the manual starter's cord/rope hole.

Insert the cord/rope into the pulley and out the manual starter's cord/rope hole, and continue to pull it thru until all of the cord/rope is outside of the manual starter housing and secured in the pulley as it should be.

Tie a knot in the cord/rope so that it doesn't acidently get pulled back into the starter. Install the manual starter''s handle. Release the knot and gently let the cord/rope be withdrawn into the manual starter.

I was doing it all wrong. I tried to wind the spring up in my hands and then hook it on either end. That sure didn't work. Your method makes it sound almost easy. Sure hope it is. Thanks.

It is..in fact, I think Joe invented the spring..he's not that old, but his knowledge is probably triple his age..:D
