Please advise, when I connect a battery and try to start the boat the prop turns when the ingnition is fired. Is this supposed to happern or is the prop supposed to disengage?

When I turn the prop by hand the engine turns with it.

We need the model number of your engine, or the size and year. There's more than one gear-shifting system. You can find the model number on a plate on the transom mount.

Always, when you ask for help here, that information is needed.
Each time you post, you should supply it, so we can help you right away, instead of asking for the information.

If you have an electric shift model, the unit defaults to forward. It shifts to neutral when the engine starts.
