How to remove spark plug wires

I need to change a distributor on my 1966 Mercury 1100, do the wires just pull off the distributor, they seem really hard and I don't want to force till someone tells me that they need to be pulled.

i am pretty sure they are screwed into the cap my 1979 140 are

Yep, screwed in...it facing down, if not, a good wave bump and they would pop out..
