Hey I am a new boater I just bought a boat with the afore mentioned motor. the first few times I took it out the boat ran fine except every so often it would jump up but then continue to go. The previous owner told me that it took 40:1 fuel so after i filled it up, i took it out again and this time instead of jumping up it would frequently come out of gear. So I would like to know if this is happening because of bad gas, if so I would like to know what you would reccommend for a ratio, or what?

I'm pretty sure the '65 is well past the switch over to 50:1. (Someone chime in with an affirmation on that.) Your oil mixture will certainly NOT be the cause of it jumping out of gear. That's more likely a shift linkage adjustment, or clutch dog going south.

Describe "jumping up" I'm not sure what you mean by that.

It was almost like it was missing or something and then it would jerk up it sounded kind of like a thump

If it's almost like it hit something, then it's your clutch dog disengaging from the forward gear. If so, you'll probably need a new clutch dog and forward gear. I don't know if this one has a symmetric clutch dog. If so you, might be able to reverse it and get a few more years of service out of it.

so then, as far as putting in a new one, would i have to get one from '65 or are they they same in every motor.

My info from a 50 year E/J dealer is 50:1on larger motors back to 1960.Use a tcw3 rated oil. That is 400 ml per 20L of fuel, or a 5 gallon container of gas would need 12.8 ounces of oil (100ml)

Just taking a guess, I'm pretty sure there's a wide range of years around '65 that will do. You might also look around for a complete lower unit. It may be cheaper than buying the parts, if you can even find them. Of course, with a used LU you could be in for the same thing all over again.

If the clutch dog is reversible, get yourself a rebuild kit and try flipping it. Anyone know off-hand if it's reversible?

The dog is reversable, but in my humble opinion that is wishful thinking. Hey, can't hurt to try. But you will be back shortly for a new dog and gear. It's very rare that the dog wears that badly without also wearing the gear. And it is foolish to put a new dog against a worn gear.

I was operating under the "never hurts to try" moniker. I vaguely remember someone here pricing out the parts not long ago in the well over $200 range. $25 for gaskets/seals and a cross-your-fingers-maybe option sure seems like it might be worth trying.

I agree with that. At least open it up and see what's what. Then decide. For sure, one can't tell without looking.
